The city's first road traffic bridge--opened in 1881 and demolished in 1956.By the 1940's weight restrictions were in place,which forced the American army to make a temporary roadway on the Alexandra railway bridge to take their heavy vehicles for their way up North.The replacement bridge was opened in 1952.

The General Post Office (C) late 1920's.Erected in 1895 this heritage listed building is no longer in use by Australia Post and has been sold to a private company.

The main street,East Street,looking South--this photo taken from the first floor of the General Post Office (C) 1931.The French built "Purrey" steam trams were withdrawn from service in 1939 and replaced with a fleet of diesel busses.The tram depot (On the corner of Denham and Canning Streets),became the bus depot and for a time the trams were stationed along the fence parallel to Canning Street.A few short years later they were scrapped,probably during a scrap metal drive conducted during the war.

The main street,East Street facing North (C) 1931.The "Purrey" steam tram system was withdrawn from service in 1939 and replaced with a fleet of diesel busses.The tropical open "Toast-rack" busses (Bottom left and centre extreme right in picture) were operated by the city's various private companies.In the (C) mid 1940's the city council took control of all bus routes and services.
