Alfred Deakin was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1856. He was Australia's second Prime Minister from 1903 to 1904, fifth Prime Minister from 1905 to 1908 and seventh Prime Minister from 1909 to 1910. He died in 1919, being survived by his wife and three daughters. (Description supplied with photograph.)

James Bevan Edwards, born 5 November 1834, in England. In 1889 he arrived in Brisbane, sent by the British government to inspect the forces of the Australian colonies and to advise on their organisation.
