The Gold Award was the highest category of honour obtainable under the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which had been introduced to Australia by Prince Philip in 1962. The scheme was designed to help young people realise their potential and to attain this award, candidates of between 14 and 20 years of age had to undertake expeditions by foot, bicycle, canoe, raft or horseback, as well as engage in matters of community interest. (Description supplied with photograph). The young women in the front row are all wearing miniskirts, which were at their peak of popularity in the 1970s. Outfits on display in this image include: skirt suits with matching miniskirts and short-sleeved jackets with contrasting collars and cuffs; and a dress with an empire line bodice trimmed with crocheted lace. Two of the women are wearing wide-brimmed hats: one is extra wide and floppy, the other is starched lace with a rose pinned on front. All of the women are wearing white cotton gloves and light-coloured handbags and high heeled or platform shoes. Hairstyles vary from long and flowing, to high, bouffant curls.
