In 1845 Charles Sturt camped by Fort Grey Basis in his search for an inland sea. At that time there was a little water in the basin, on my visit in 2002 it was bone dry. This old steam engine once pumped water from a well into tanks during drought years. The basin has been full, and history records that waves wrecked the original stone homestead on the Northern Bank. 'Explorer Tree' emblazoned by Churles Sturt in 1845. It is a 6 Km walk from the present Fort Grey camp site across Fort Grey Basin. 'Fort' refers to the coral built to contain the animals they had with them.
