The goldfields were the site of a gold rush between 1880 and 1883. Gold occurs in sand and stretches from Wallaga Lake to the ocean, and from Camel Rock in the North to Keating Headland. Many of the shafts have been preserved among the ferns and regrown flora and reinhabitted fauna.
