The Queen of the North mine was one of the first deep reef mines to open to discover the main lode feeding the rich alluvial fields 1874-1887. A steam haulage plant and battery were erected in 1878.

The boilers are still intact, although in 1939 the battery was removed.

The mine flooded in 1887 and there were several unsuccessful attempts to rework the mine in the early 1900s.
