The Comet Mine and Battery date from the mid 1870s with the first recorded ore being crushed in 1880. The mine was flooded in 1889 after its two best years and was never worked again.

The Palmer River Preservation and Restoration Society erected a shed in 1987 to the same design as the original to preserve the Cornish boiler and large single cylinder Cochrane 25hp stationery steam engine and fly wheel.

The Langlands Cornish boiler, 1882, is set in a brick and clay bed, and powered a ten head of stamps long after the mine closed. The battery finally ceased working in 1915.

Berdan grinding pans lie in the grass but the stampers have long gone and there is no evidence of anything else of the once busy mill that crushed 3,558 tons of ore for a yield if 5,979 ounces of gold between 1880 and 1893.

The nearby Mabel Louise Battery was crushing prior to the Comet Battery, having been erected in 1877 and worked until 1879. Its Rbey Portable Engine was manufactured in 1876 in England and is one of the oldest on the field.
