Papunya is located just off the Kintore Road in the southwest of the Northern Territory a distance of about 1190km south from Darwin (show me). With a population of around 260, Papunya is one of the smaller towns in Australia. At about 611m above sea level, Papunya is one of the higher villages in the Northern Territory. It is also one of the southernmost villages in the Northern Territory. The nearest ocean is the Southern Ocean about 920km south of Papunya.

The nearest more populous place is the village of Hermannsburg which is 120km away with a population of around 460 (show me a map with Papunya and Hermannsburg).
