Select another page | 1 | 2 | Next  | 1 - Woolshed Creek Geological Monument (Contributed by: MontHall 269 pictures ) The Woolshed Creek Geological Monument is on the site of the first Silurian fossils found in Australia. The sedimentary rock containing the fossils was formed about 420 million years ago. The rock is a grey mudstone within a rock unit named the Canberra Formation.
Fossils were discovered in this mudstone by Reverend W.B. Clarke in the mid 1840s. For quite some time these were the oldest known fossils in Australia. The fossils found by Clarke are brachiopods.
