The historic first shaft sunk by Nettleton in 1902 looking for opals. An old church that has featured in a number of movies is set among the diggings near the 'Open Cut Drive' route. Polish Alex began building his Astronomers' Monument in 1983 out of cement. The column sections were formed in tins and cemented on top of one another.
