The Awatea Seamount lies about 670 km (362 nautical miles) off the coast of New South Wales (show New South Wales on map).

In the near vicinity of the Awatea Seamount the water depth ranges from about 3230 to 4960 metres deep (about 1760 to 2710 fathoms / 10600 to 16300 feet). Based on this, the Awatea Seamount seems to rise about 1730 metres (947 fathoms / 5680 feet) above the sea floor . This is more than half the height of Mount Kosciuszko but amazingly the top of the Awatea Seamount is still 3.2 km (1760 fathoms / 10600 feet) below the surface.
