Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry crossed the tropical north Queensland coast near Innisfail during the morning of Monday 20 March 2006. The eye of the cyclone made landfall near Innisfail around daybreak on Monday 20 March. Wind speeds of 294kp/h were recorded during the cyclone with estimated wind gusts of up to 320kp/h reported for the Innisfail region. The total damage bill for the affected regions has been estimated at in excess of $1.5 billon.

Fortunately, no lives were lost and no serious injuries were reported. However, between Babinda and Tully, damage to infrastructure and crops was extensive with the total estimated loss upwards of half a billion dollars. To a somewhat lesser extent, damage also occurred in areas north to Cairns, south to Cardwell and on the Atherton Tablelands.

It is estimated that approximately 85 percent of Australia’s commercial banana crop is grown in North Queensland from Cardwell through to Tully, and Innisfail through to Babinda and on to the Atherton Tableland. Most of these crops were lost in the cyclone, causing an Australia-wide banana shortage.

Former Australian Defence Force chief General Peter Cosgrove was appointed as head of the cyclone recovery task force to organise the clean-up of the disaster area and was assisted by the military and many volunteer workers.
