Cook is not the busy isolated town it once was in the Trans Continental Railway days with close to 100 people with school and hospital. Its busy moments come 4 times a week when the Indian Pacific passes through and the store is packed with tourists.

The purpose for stopping is to water the train, not now for the locomotives but for the passenger services.

This marker recognises an effort made in 2006 to plant 1,000 trees in Cook. The project was only partly successful, but the trees that did survive have transformed the town.
