Gold was discovered at Pine Creek near Gandy's Gully (about 2km's north of the town) in 1871. Pine Creek has been bypassed by the Stuart Highway. It's well worth taking the little detour through the town and then heading up to the lookout with great views of the Enterprise Pit.
