Although a number of significant brick buildings and a hospital remain in the old town of Hill End, these date from the late 1860s when gold was first being won.

Hawkins Hill was the 'Golden Quarter Mile' of deep reef mining in 1870-1872.

Hawkins Hill was 450 metres above the TuronRiver and so steep that retaining walls had to be built to support diggings and tracks.

Flying foxes were used to transport equipment up and down the slope and across the valley.

Site of the Star of Peace deep reef mine. Some shafts went down 200 metres.
