Burke and Wills, on their expedition from Melbourne, passed through the Cloncurry district in 1861 on their way to the salt marshes of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Burke named the river after his cousin Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry of County Galway in Ireland. (Description supplied with photograph). Monument reads: This obelisk was erected by the Cloncurry Shire Council, Mount Isa Mines Limited and Mary Kathleen Uranium Limited to commemorate the expedition of Burke and Wills who crossed this spot on 22nd January 1861 on their journey across the Australian continent.
