The historic first shaft sunk by Nettleton in 1902 looking for opals. He did not find any opal deposits here and moved on.

An old church that has featured in a number of movies is set among the diggings near the 'Open Cut Drive' route. There is no sign of the shacks and dwellings that made up the community in this section of the opal field.

Among the eccentric buildings in the area is Amigo's Castle; made completely by hand, and in 2002 still under construction.

Polish Alex began building his Astronomers' Monument in 1983 out of cement. The column sections were formed in tins and cemented on top of one another. The whole building is covered in astonomical signs.
