From a small photo album of historic photos of Thursday Island and neighbouring islands, given to my grandmother in 1907. She and my grandfather met on Thursday Island, where they worked for some years in the hospital - she as a cook, he as a hospital orderly who was taught to do the dentistry and some other medical procedures by the two GPs who ran the hospital at the time. My grandmother arrived on Thursday Island with cousins on a ship from Ireland, and decided to stay on TI. My grandfather was from Ipswich in Queensland, and came to Thursday Island as a young man, originally working on the pearling luggers.
