Mount Lyell Tas with Queenstown at the base

Over 100 years of copper mining stripped timber from the hills. Sulphur fumes from the smelter combined with high to almost toxic natural levels of copper and sulphur in the soil combined with poor soil kept thin by high rainfall and cold weather prevents natural vegetation regrowth.
