Main street in Mount Isa with Smiths Hotel on the left, ca. 1936
contributed by QldPics, taken in 1936
(contact QldPics about this picture)

Mount Isa streetscene with cars and trucks passing in front of the Pioneer Store, and the butcher's shop. Caption under the photograph reads, ' Smith's Hotel on the corner. Beer, 1/- a mug, Lager, 3/- a bottle. Costs a lot of money to get merry in this town.' (Description supplied with photograph.) Mount Isa is situated next to the Selwyn Ranges on the Leichhardt River. Mount Isa owes its prosperity to the huge Mount Isa Mine, the world’s largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. In 1923 John Campbell Miles found a silver-lead ore outcrop and made a claim for two mining leases. Mount Isa Mines took over operations in 1924. This rich deposit is still producing high volumes of ore and is classed as one of the world's great mines. (Information taken from Queensland Holidays website, 2006, retrieved 5 April 2006, from
