Sandalwood loaded on a truck in Blackwater, 1935

(contact QldPics about this picture)

Blackwater is a coal mining town in central Queensland, 190 kilometres west of Rockhampton. Coal was discovered there by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845, when the area was occupied by the Gangulu people, but commercial exploitation did not begin until 1962. The township was laid out in 1886 and the name was inspired by the dark colour of local waterholes. (Information taken from: Brian and Barbara Kennedy, Australian Place Names, 1st ed., 1989 and Cambridge Dictionary of Australian Places, 1st ed., 1992)
